Visit DomUnder and Castellum Hoge Woerd
The historic city center of Utrecht is in itself a good reason to visit Utrecht. But did you know that the history goes all the way back to the Romans? DomUnder is the place to be to learn more about this history. During an enthusiastic guided tour through the archaeological excavations you see remainders of the Roman Castellum Traiectum, which were found underneath Domplein.

It brings you through 2000 year of history, while seeing the various layers of buildings hidden under the pavers and listening to the animated stories. Also when standing on the pavers, many things remind us of this history. When walking from Oudegracht to Domplein, street level rises: you literally walk on the remainders of the former buildings. Also, at Domplein, look at the deviant colours in the pavers, which determine the contours of the Roman Castellum. The outline of the Castellum is indicated by metal strips in the ground.
– You can only visit DomUnder with a guided tour. Currently tours are only available available in Dutch (English tours are under construction), check the website for the latest information

Museum Castellum Hoge Woerd
Also in Leidsche Rijn, a new- build neighbourhood on the edge of Utrecht, remainders of the Romans are found during archaeological excavations. Museum Castellum Hoge Woerd, (free entry) exhibits a well preserved Roman ship, de Meern 1, and many other excavated objects. It also shows, in an interactive way, the evolvement of the place during the years to what it is now.
