Utrecht is a city full of small and bigger beer breweries. They are spread over the city, and sometimes a bit hidden, but all recommended to visit. And all with a different atmosphere: from urban-feel brewbup, to proper café serving organic food.

Founded by two brothers who started to brew beers at home as a hobby. In 2013 their first beers are sold at an Utrechts beer-brew festival and from then their brewery took a flight. Currently situated on industrial area Overvechtwhere the front area of their warehouse is transformed into a very nice, industrial taproom – right next to the brewery. On Friday & Saturday’s it’s possible to taste one of the 16 beers available on tap – both in regular and tasting glasses. From a session IPA to a Triple and from a blond beer to a stout. Or choose from one of the handful of alcohol-free beers on offer. All are served by some beer-brew enthusiasts. Check their website for more information and the beers available on tap.
Werkspoorcafé de Leckere
Brewers since 1997 and since 2019 in their new brewery in Werkspoorfabriek. They only brew organic beers and highly value sustainability in the brewing process. The beers can be tasted in Werkspoorcafé de Leckere, at business park Cartesiusweg, with a big terrace facing Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal. Also a nice place for a bite to eat of to have drinks.
Brewpub de Kromme Haring
An American and Dutch brewer teamed up to start brewery de Kromme Haring. In 2016 their brewpub opened up, a bit hidden at business park Europalaan, where you drink a beer of one of the twelve taps, while looking at the kettles in which they were brewed. Try some tasting glasses recommended by the enthusiastic and helpful staff in this urban-feel city brewpub.
On the edge of Maximapark in Leidsche Rijn, Maximus brewery opened up his doors for public in 2012. Since then the tasting room with views on the copper kettles is a popular hangout for Utrechters. With a sunlit terrace with views on an apple tree orchard as unique selling point. All own-brewed beers can be ordered, as well as a sample board with 4 tasting glasses. Combined with some snacks, lunch or dinner, often cooked with regional products. A bit out of the way but definitely worth a visit, as the way biking there (Leidseweg, Dafne Schippers bridge, Groenedijk) is lovely in itself.
The CAB building used to be a garage for busses owned by the Dutch railway company. It is situated next to Zuilen train station and currently houses dB studio’s, Filmcafé, de Sportbox and the beerpub of Oproer brewery. The big, industrial hall has a nice, urban feel and offers various seating options: beanbags, high tables with barstools, couches and regular tables. All Oproer beers are served as well as a selection of beers from other craft breweries, with a wide variety of beers on tap. Further, a limited, fully plant based and organic menu is offered. The beer itself is brewed in another part of Utrecht.
