Utrecht is a city full of canals and terraces. Your visit to Utrecht is not complete without a visit to one of these. In this blog I share a number of city beaches and other beautiful canal-side terraces. Both on walking and biking distance from Utrecht central station.

Roost aan de Singel
In summer months Roost aan de Singel, close to the Utrecht Central Station, is perfect to hangout with friends. The place has a unique look and feel. It’s right at Singel and made from wood, like old window frames. Enjoy the braai, a beer and the sun on the terrace. Or take your picknick blanket and lie down in the grass besides the canal.
Werkspoorcafé de Leckere
Utrecht is the home to many beer breweries. One of them is de Leckere, who has their own café in Werkspoorkathedraal: Werkspoorcafé de Leckere at business park Cartesiusweg. The terrace faces Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal. Dream away while watching the big boats go by and enjoying your beer from de Leckere brewery or one of their guest brewers. A nice place for lunch, snacks and dinner.
In 2020, Werkspoorkade is created right next to the terrace from de Leckere. A big, festival-like terrace with plenty of space – both in sun as shade – and nice views. Each week it’s exploited by a different Utrecht restaurant owner, therefor it’s always a surprise what’s on the menu.
At the other side of Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal, another newbie opened up: DEMKA Kade. Get your feet in the sand, pick something from the braai, have a beer and play some jeu de boules, table tennis or gaze over the canal with its boats passing by. Surprisingly nice spot – unexpected in-between industry.
Buurten in de Fabriek
On the edge of Park Oog in Al and the Merwedekanaal the 1908 Cereolfabriek, completely transformed in 2014, houses a theatre room, a primary school and a library. At the great terrace or inside at Buurten in de Fabriek, you can enjoy food and drinks almost any time of day. While viewing over the houseboats, the locks across the Merwedekanaal and the Lombok houses on the other side of the canal.
Op Zuid , a NY style bar & bistro, is situated in the former, monumental factory of Neerlandia at the far end of Hoograven. The big terrace is located directly at the water of Vaartsche Rijn. Come by bike, foot or boat for a burger or pizza. Or have some drinks from their extensive beer (of which 17 on tap) and wine menu.
Strand Oog in Al (SOIA)
In the far end of Oog in Al city-beach SOIA, surrounded by Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal, created a super-chill place in spring and summer. Most popular on sunny days. Big, and often busy, terrace for food and drinks. And lots of grass to chill on your own picknick blanket. No swimming allowed.
Next to train station Vaartsche Rijn, old industry is transformed into a fancy area for food and drinks, Rotsoord. With lots of terraces. Neighbours Klein Berlijn and Taplokaal Gist do not only have nice beers on offer, they also have plenty of space on their terrace directly at Vaartsche Rijn. Also Camping Ganspoort, het Ketelhuis and de Zagerij (the two share a space in former PasToe factory) offer canalside views. LE:EN does have a terrace (and delicious food), though is not directly situated at the canal.
TIP: When walking from Rotsoord to city center (Ledig Erf) you pass by Ooster- and Westerkade. Also nice spots for a canal-side terrace.
Bike to the beautiful nature reserve Amelisweerd, where the green fields underneath the many trees invite you for a picknick. Fancy a pancake, lunch, piece of pie or just a drink? Visit Theehuis Rhijnauwen, with a beautifully situated terrace, on the grass in the woods, directly at river Krommerijn.

More interested in harbour-views? Go to Veilinghaven, on close walking distance from Utrecht Central Station and Jaarbeurs, with a few restaurants with terraces facing the boats in the harbour. Situated in an architectonical building with large windows, Fico serves a fine dinner with pairing wines, while overlooking the iconic U-Trechters. Visit Pesto for a fine Italian menu. Fancy a beer? Go to the terrace of Beers & Barrels.
